WATCH: Chargers Head Coach Talks About Drafting Jamaree Salyer

Every year around the combine we always hear cool or funny stories from coaches about certain players from the draft and this year is no different. On Tuesday, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley gave some behind the scenes on what went into drafting former UGA OL Jamaree Salyer.

Last year, Staley joined a handful of coaches at Kirby Smart’s annual coaching clinic. The Chargers knew that they liked Jamaree before that, but during that clinic, Staley got the chance to speak to Smart about Jamaree and they walked away from that loving Jamaree. On Draft day during the sixth round, he ended up calling Kirby Smart and asking about possibly drafting Salyer. Smart's response was “this guy is the real deal”. Staley added that they probably picked him two rounds late, and when their original starter went down Salyer came in and probably “saved their season”.
