Two Georgia Bulldogs Tabbed as College Footballs Next Rising Superstars
Kirby Smart has put a very high standard on this Georgia Football Program in the time that he has been here. The expectation should be nothing short of greatness. And based on the way things are going that seems that will be the case for a very long time.
247 Sports recently released their “Rising Superstars” list for the 2023 season, and two Bulldogs made the list. Some other names that made the list are Jordan Travis, Florida State QB, Squirrel White, Tennessee WR, and Kelvin Banks, Texas OT.
Mykel Williams was the first Bulldog on the list. During his freshman season, Williams played in all 15 games and recorded 28 tackles, 15 solo tackles, and 4.5 sacks. The article mentioned what most of us already know, Williams is going to get better during his sophomore season. The one thing that will make him that much better is if the Bulldogs can find a complementary edge rusher to take some of the focus off of Williams the whole time. Guys like Marvin Jones Jr and Jalon Walker will have their names called a lot this offseason.
“Meet college football’s next great pass rusher. I feel great about saying that following a true freshman season that saw Mykel Williams post 33 pressures to go along with 28 tackles, 6.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks. Those 33 pressures came in 291 pass rush snaps. That’s a pressure every 8.8 snaps. That’s a very similar rate to someone like Anudike-Uzomah (8.4) who was considered one of the best edge rushers in college football. Williams should only get better entering his sophomore campaign, especially if Georgia can find a complimentary pass rusher opposite him.” - 247 Sports
Dominic Lovett was the next Bulldog that made the list. He transferred in from Missouri this season and was also recruited by teams like LSU, Tennessee, and Kentucky. In his sophomore season at Missouri, he recorded 56 catches for 846 yards and 3 touchdowns. Those numbers are pretty impressive especially when you look at Missouri’s subpar quarterback play. This season at Georgia he is going to be the number 1 or 2 option in this offense with a much better quarterback than he ever had at Missouri.
“Dominic Lovett is the best receiver in college football you’ve probably never heard of. The rising junior finished third in the SEC with 846 yards despite subpar quarterback play at Missouri. There’s a reason why the likes of Georgia, LSU and Tennessee pushed so hard for him in the transfer portal. The St. Louis native might not equal his 2022 numbers based on the way Georgia’s offense operates (more mouths to feed and a heavy run-game emphasis), but being on the national stage in Athens should lift Lovett into the conversation as one of college football’s best receivers.” - 247 Sports
Georgia has a lot of talent on this upcoming team, but these two players could play a very important role in this team’s success.
