Spring Needs: What Georgia Needs To Learn About the Running Back Position

At the University of Georgia, the running back position has become a staple of the program. You expect the Bulldogs to have a group of talented running backs and that will not change this year. Georgia is losing Kenny McIntosh to the NFL who was the lead back last year. That means it’s time for someone to step up into that role.

Kendall Milton is the back everyone thinks will finally get his chance to be the number one guy. Milton has struggled with injuries throughout his career at UGA but is heading into spring camo fully healthy for the first time. Daijuan Edwards will also get a lot of reps this season. He saw a good amount of playing time last year and the coaches really liked what he did late in the season. He is the more shifty of the two backs.

The next thing that Georgia will be watching is the development of Branson Robinson. He showed flashes of what he could do in the National Championship. Last season, he had 68 carries, 330 yards, and 3 touchdowns in a small sample size last season. He is a true power back when you look at him, but he also has some speed to him. I think Robinson is going to get a handful of reps to prove himself early in the season. If he does well with those reps and protects the ball, could we see a three-headed rotation for the Bulldogs backfield this year?

The final question the Bulldogs staff will be watching is the progression from the ACL tear Andrew Paul suffered last summer. He was creating a lot of buzz from staff and players in late July and early August until he tore his ACL in a scrimmage. He probably will not see a lot of reps this season, but the Bulldogs want to set him up for the future because they believe he could be running back number one or two during the 2024-25 season.
