Spring Needs: Georgia Has Many Options on the Offensive Line That They Need to Figure Out.
Spring Practice is upon us, which Bulldog offensive linemen are going to spereate themselves from the rest of the pack?
Georgia will have a good problem on their hands this spring at the offensive line position. There is a strong consensus on who will be the starters on that line. Amarius Mims, Sedrick Van Pran, and Tate Ratledge are the lockdown spots heading into spring practice next week.
Last season, Amarius Mims didn’t make his first career start until the College Football Playoff Semi-Final against Ohio State. He was the player that everyone knew was going to be a good player but it was hard to find him playing time early in the 2023 season because they had Warren McClendon at that spot and there were no signs of him giving that up. He eventually got hurt in the SEC Championship and that led to the emergence of Amarius Mims. Sedrick Van Pran the center has been the leader of the o-line since his first career start during the Clemson game back in the 2021 season. He is going to be part of the senior leaders on the 2023 team. Finally, Tate Ratledge is the third guy that is penciled in right now. His 2021 season was cut short due to an injury suffered in game one. He has had the trust of Kirby Smart since then and bearing another injury should be in line to start the 2023 season off as a starter.
Now that means there are two spots on that o-line that aren’t taken yet. One tackle position and one guard position. Here are some names that will compete for those positions.
Earnest Greene (Tackle) - Greene is a lot like Amarius Mims, not in his play style but in how he is looked at by the team. He was a highly recruited player out of St. John Bosco back in high school, and he’s a guy that much like Mimss that everyone knows has all the talent in the world but he needs to win the job first. He suffered an injury early in the season that never allowed him to get the rhythm in practice or any late-game reps. He is going to get a strong look from offensive line coach Stacy Searles.
Monroe Freeling (Tackle) - The incoming freshman has all the talent in the world. He is also a monster of a man, UGA has him listed at 6’7, 300 pounds. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to start at such an important position as a freshman. However, it might be the best opportunity for anyone on this team during spring practice, due to the fact that there isn’t a guy at that position that is more ahead than the other.
Xavier Truss (Guard) - Some people will argue that Truss is 100% going to be the starter at this position for the Bulldogs. But when you mix in the fact that Truss had an up-and-down season last year, and struggles to hold his blocks against faster defensive linemen, that could open up the door for another player.
Micah Morris (Guard) - Micah is the other player talked about earlier. He saw action in seven of the fifteen games last season and was praised by players throughout the entire 2022 season. He is 6’6, 330. He has a very quick step during pass plays which has brought a lot of attention to him from people in the facility. During his freshman season in 2021, he only played in two games but he didn’t give up any sacks and now it is finally his time to compete for a starting spot. It could also be a situation with him and Xavier Truss where they split reps in-game for the first four weeks when you look at their opponents. Once those four games are over, turn on the tape and whoever the coaches think is the better player that’s who you role with for the 2023 season.
