What Is the QB Battle Going To Look Like After the News of Mike Bobo Being Named Offensive Coordinator?

Georgia got some news last week that people knew was coming but it did not make it any easier to grasp. Todd Monken took a job to go back to the NFL which lead to Mike Bobo being named offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs. Now one of the biggest questions that we will be waiting to be answered is how does this change the QB Battle this off-season?

It was no secret prior to the news about Bobo that Carson Beck looked like he had the upper hand in this QB Battle. He got the majority of the garbage time snaps and spent the most time learning from Todd Monken that season and looked like he had a very solid grasp of the offense and the trust of Monken. Now with Monken being out and Bobo being in it looks like it will be a completely wide-open battle.

Now, why is that the case you might ask. Mike Bobo has about as good of QB Knowledge as anyone in the business. His father was a QB, and Bobo himself was a QB at Georgia and was also a QB coach at three different schools including Georgia, Auburn, and South Carolina. Mike Bobo is going to take a very long look at each of the three quarterbacks and look to make sure he gets the right guy. There’s one QB that Bobo might have his eyes on for a little bit longer than the others, and that would be Gunner Stockton. Bobo has known Stockton since he was a freshman in high school during the recruiting process. He got Stockton to commit to South Carolina and had him locked into that class for a long time until Kirby Smart came around. Bobo knows what Stockton is capable of with his arm and his legs. Brock Vandagriff is the next QB that has a leg in this battle. Vandagriff was another tightly touted prospect out of high school and certainly has all the physical traits you want in a star QB. He has only thrown three passes in his UGA career so much like Stockton we don’t have a large sample size of what he can do, but we have seen him use his legs in some games during the 2021 season. Carson Beck is the one who has been talked about the most so far. Most fans believe he is just a shoe-in to win the job, but if we have learned anything over the years with Coach Smart and this staff it’s that everyone will get a fair chance to compete for a spot and the right to play. Carson has shown that he knows how to run the offense and has the trust of those guys already. He has received a high level of praise from Coach Smart. Carson has shown off his arm which will definitely make any offensive coordinator get up out of their seat. Bobo has had a front-row seat to Carson Beck getting reps in the game and he definitely knows what he is capable of if he does end up winning the starting job for Mike Bobo and the Bulldogs.

One thing is for sure, whichever quarterback ends up winning the starting job this off-season Mike Bobo is going to be working with a very talented player and with the weapons surrounding him and Bobo at the helm there could be some historic numbers put up in Athens this upcoming season.
