Newcomer Report G-Day 2022:

G-Day New Comer Review 2022:

With the annual spring game now behind us, UGA has officially turned its heads to summer practice. Let’s take a look at some of the freshmen and new transfers that played last Saturday.

Arik Gilbert was the main talk in the UGA program during the off-season. He showed why on Saturday. Gilbert hauled in three total passes and two of them went for touchdowns, both from Stetson Bennett. Gilbert has been working as a TE so far during his time in Athens, due to the injuries in the TE room. If the Dawgs can get healthy soon don’t be shocked if you see Gilbert spread out to the receiver position before week 1. Gilbert is currently around 260-255 pounds. He wants to get down to around 240 so he can make that switch to WR this fall.

Oscar Delp turned some heads on Saturday. If it wasn’t obvious already he is LEGIT. He had 7 catches for about 91 yards. Delp showed that he is physically ready to play. He put a punishing blow on a couple of guys out there, and had a nice catch and run in the second quarter. I think Delp is going to prove himself, even more, this summer, and make sure Coach Smart gets him into the starting rotation for TE early in the season.

Daylen Everette didn’t exactly stuff the stat sheet on Saturday but it was very obvious that the talented freshman DB is going to be a key factor in the UGA defense during his career at Georgia. I’m the Arian Smith deep ball early in the game, Everette was beaten but only by maybe 1 step. He was with Arian stride for stride the whole time. I think that was an eye-opener for the people who have never seen Everette play before.

Sticking in the secondary let’s talk about a pair of freshman DBS. Malaki Starks and Jacorey Thomas. Both of them had very solid performances this past Saturday. Starks was tied for most tackles and Thomas just has a nose for the ball. Starks is an ELITE athlete and it will take time to fully learn the safety position but once he does it’s going to be fun to watch. Jacorey Thomas is the head hunter of the two. He reminds me a lot of Lewis Cine. He will let you know when he hits you. I think Thomas has more of a grasp of the position than Starks right now because he played it more in high school.

Jalon Walker had a pretty good day as well. He didn’t exactly fill up the stat sheet, but he made the most of the opportunities he got. Walker is the most physically ready freshman linebacker I have seen in a long time. He just plays like he has been in college before. If you watch the film he was where he was supposed to be the majority of the time. He filled the gaps when he was supposed to, and he went to go try and make a plan when the opportunity presented itself.

It is safe to say that the UGA football program is in good hands with these young men, and the others in this class that we didn’t talk about today.
