Who Are the Breakout Canidates for Georgia This Upcoming Season?
Every year, we see it happen. A player isn’t talked about at all, and then they start to string together a few solid practices, and then next thing you know, this player is penciled into the starting lineup in game one of a new season. Take Javon Bullard as one example from this past season. In 2021, he only recorded 11 total tackles. During the 2022 off-season, he was definitely a player that people knew about and thought he could win the starting job at nickel. However, no one saw this kid and expected him to win the defensive MVP in both playoff games, which included the national championship. So, who will it be this year?
As spring practices approach us quickly, it’s time to take a look at some players that might be on the verge of a breakout season with the help of a good spring and summer camp.
Daylen Everette - Defensive Back
Georgia has a hole on one side of the field. We know Kamari Lassiter is going to be CB1 next season, so that leaves the door open for one CB spot. Daylen Everette is the name that has been mentioned the most with that job early on. He was usually the first cornerback off the bench in garbage time and got a very good amount of playing time this past season. He has the length and size that coaches love in a defensive back. I think Everette is going to have the best shot at starting next to Kamari, and if that does end up being the case, he is going to have a fantastic year.
Dillon Bell - Wide Receiver
Georgia brought in two transfer wide receivers this off-season. If you look at the past, Kirby Smart has brought transfers to the room when he knows there’s going to be competition. In the new Mike Bobo offense, there’s going to be a lot of rotating at the wide receiver position during the beginning of the season. Dillon Bell has a chance to really show everyone what he is about. If you watched Bell last season, you know what he can do when he has the ball in his hands. He is one of those guys that just knows how to get open. He is quick off the line and has solid hands. If Bell makes the most of his reps early in the season, I think that he is going to get a lot of meaningful reps next season.
Bear Alexander - Defensive Line
He flashed what he could do late in the national championship game. He looked like he was hitting a different gear in that game. He recorded one sack in that game against TCU. Georgia is losing Jalen Carter to the draft, and Bear Alexander looks to be next in line for that job. He is going to get his opportunities, and a lot of them will come. I think he is going to be a very good pass rusher during his time at Georgia. The one thing that I saw on film was his slow first step in the run game. Now, that could just be due to a lack of experience and game reps. However, if he wants to start at this level in SEC football, it will need to be fixed in practice so it doesn’t hurt him in the game.
